FAAN sparks Next-Gen interest with NYSC, high school aviation career programme

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken a decisive step toward closing the future talent gap in the aviation sector by hosting its New Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) Training Programme in Lagos.

Designed to expose youth to the vast ecosystem of aviation careers beyond traditional flight deck and cabin crew roles, the initiative brought together members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) alongside students from MMA Secondary School, Air Force Secondary School, and Honeyland Schools.

Delivering the welcome address on behalf of Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FAAN, the Director of Engineering Services (DES), Engr. Abiola Muniru Adejare, reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talent to sustain Nigeria’s expanding aviation industry.

Echoing this vision, the General Manager of Welfare and Management Services, Mrs Gladys Omotosho, who represented the Director of Human Resources, Dr Emiola Olatubosun Luqman, emphasised in her opening remarks the importance of early career exposure, structured mentorship, and targeted skill acquisition for the emerging workforce.

The technical sessions featured interactive presentations by industry specialists across diverse disciplines, including a commercial pilot who detailed the rigorous training regimens, personal discipline, and professional commitments required to command commercial aircraft.

A medical professional highlighted career pathways in aviation medicine, underscoring the critical role healthcare specialists play in pilot certification, passenger safety, and occupational health.

Representatives from the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS) outlined the high-stakes training, rapid-response capabilities, and tactical skills essential for airport emergency management and safety operations.

A professional photographer and filmmaker demonstrated how visual storytelling, corporate communications, and media production play a key role in modern aviation branding and advocacy.

Delegates from the Federation of International Drone Soccer Association (FIDA) Nigeria introduced participants to uncrewed aerial systems (UAS), detailing emerging commercial applications, regulatory landscapes, and technical pathways in drone technology.

To translate theory into practice, the event featured a live drone soccer demonstration and hands-on trial.

Participants operated drone systems, gaining real-time exposure to flight dynamics, piloting mechanics, and emerging tech applications.

Wrapping up the event, the host and General Manager of Training and Human Resource Development, Dr Toyin Akinlade, urged the students and corps members to remain curious, build multidisciplinary skills, and proactively position themselves to capitalise on opportunities across the global aviation value chain.
